Pakistan – the roof of the world

Ever asked yourself if there was one country where you might find the highest concentration of mountains over 7000m? Where you could find the longest glaciers outside of the Polar Regions with seven over 40km long, yet still find yourself immersed in an ancient culture, surrounded by a vibrant mix of customs, cuisines and colour?

Would this country be charged with a cultural history dating back over six thousand years, setting the backdrop for four major world religions?

Would the north of the country be home to some of the most unexplored and isolated places on Earth, an adventure playground hosting the junction of the three greatest mountain ranges in the world: The Himalaya, the Karakoram and the Hindu Kush. In the south, where you would find awe-inspiring Mughal architecture, mystical Sufi shrines, ancient archaeological sites and eerie mausoleums?

Would you guess Pakistan? Not many would. This of course is a country that commonly appears in the news in the context of reports of complete instability in the region. In truth, such instability is not widespread, and is to be found in only a tiny fraction of the country.
